It’s natural to be unsure about permanently marking your body. As humans, we constantly assess risks and find excuses not to do the things our hearts desire.
When my dad passed away, I was fortunate to spend time with him in the hospice before he was cremated. I spent a long time studying all of his tattoos. He had full sleeves, layers upon layers of ink. Some of the designs had melded into one another from years of sun exposure and old-school ink that didn't hold either.
He was a kind-hearted rebel who told his life’s story on his body. His arms spoke of the children he raised and loved, the lost brothers, the beautiful women who had shaped his heart, and his love for music, myths, and the tales of Fidel Castro. Some symbols were secret to him—meanings he took to his grave. His last tattoos, done by Ryan, were swallows on each hand, symbolizing our time together during his last trip to visit me in Australia.
I was so thankful he was covered in so much imagery because I got to know him a little more through his tattoos in his death.
